Bodrum

Bodrum, formerly Halicarnassus, is a Turkish port town in Muğla Province, in the southwestern Aegean Region of the country. It is located on the southern coast of Bodrum Peninsula, at a point that checks the entry into the Gulf of Gökova, and it faces the Greek island of Kos. Today, it is an international center of tourism and yachting. The city was called Halicarnassus of Caria in ancient times. The Mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was here.

The Aegean region of Turkey is the country’s most fertile area growing cotton, tobacco, olives, cereals, vegetables, grapes, figs, oranges, tangerines, lemons and other fruit. The region also contains innumerable sites of antiquity including three of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the Seven Churches of Asia Minor addressed by St. John in Revelations.

Bodrum, the center of an administrative district called ilce, has a permanent population of some 25,000 and stands on the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, once the capital of the kingdom of Caria. Located in the southwest corner of the Aegean region of Turkey, Bodrum is a major tourist attraction due to its excellent climate, beautiful coastline and a plethora of proximate sites of historical importance and natural beauty.

One of the world's finest museums of underwater archeology housed in a superb 15th century castle built by the Knights of St. John of Rhodes. The world's oldest known shipwreck exhibition is now open. This star attraction rates a 'must see' on everyone's list.
